Orange Beef Bowls

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 25 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes
Yield: Makes 6-8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rice (cooked in a rice cooker, with 1 tsp toasted sesame oil)
  • 2 heads of broccoli (florets cut off)
  • 1 onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2-3 cups cabbage (or 1 bag of Asian chopped salad mix, such as the Little Salad Bar Asian Chopped Salad Kit from Aldi—keep the dressing for later use)
  • 1-2 lbs thinly sliced beef (such as USDA Choice Thin Sliced Beef for Carne Picada from Aldi)
  • 2-3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2-3 tbsp soy sauce
  • Burman’s Orange Sauce or General Tso Sauce (or your preferred homemade version—about 12-14 oz)
  • Optional: Dumplings (cooked per package instructions)
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes
  • Optional for serving: Sriracha and/or sriracha mayo

Directions:

  1. Cook the Rice: Start by cooking the rice in your rice cooker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once done, stir in 1 tsp of toasted sesame oil for extra flavor. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Vegetables: Heat 2 tbsp of cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, and cabbage (or salad mix). Stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes, then add 2 tbsp of soy sauce and cook until the vegetables are tender but still vibrant. Once cooked, remove from the pan and set the vegetables aside.
  3. Cook the Beef: In the same pan, add the thinly sliced beef. Cook until it’s nearly fully cooked through, then remove the beef from the pan using tongs, leaving any oil and fat behind.
  4. Stir-Fry the Broccoli: In the remaining oil from the beef, add the broccoli into the pan and stir-fry for a 3-5 minutes until tender but still slightly crunchy. If needed, add an additional 1 tbsp of oil to help cook the broccoli.
  5. Combine the Beef & Broccoli: Return the cooked beef to the pan with the broccoli. Stir to combine and cook until the beef is fully cooked through.
  6. Add the Sauce: Pour the entire bottle of Burman’s Orange Sauce (or your homemade General Tso sauce) over the beef and broccoli mixture. Stir until everything is coated and heated through. Add red pepper flakes to taste for some heat, if desired.
  7. Assemble the Bowls: To serve, place a scoop of rice in each bowl, top with the stir-fried beef and broccoli mixture, and add a portion of the cooked vegetables. If you made dumplings, add one or two on top. For an extra kick, drizzle with sriracha or sriracha mayo when serving or reheating.

Enjoy!
